details: Represented by CAW Local 1973. Until April 2007, 350 workers were on a temporary 2-month layoff. Upon returning to work, the company announced 375 permanent layoffs to start July 2007. However, on May 17, 2007, GM indicated that no new product is intended for the plant, and transmission assembly would be moving to St. Catharines in 2009 (represented by CAW Local 199). The plant faces closure in 3 years, by 2010. On June 3, 2007, Buzz Hargrove announced the CAW would launch a nation-wide strike of GM facilities in September 2008 if a new product for the Windsor plant was not found. There is also no guarantee for St. Catharines workers that the product will definitely come to their facility. GM has asked plant management and union leaders to make "a business case" for sending the work there, which "will include renegotiation of a local union agreement to lower costs and improve efficiencies, and gaining government support, GM spokesperson Stew Low said" to the Toronto Star. GM announced on May 12, 2008 its firm intent to close the plant in 2010. |

details: Represented by CEP Local 290. Manufacturer of coated-one-side specialty packaging paper, wall covering, latex saturated papers, and envelope papers. The paper mill had been part of the Thorold community for over 100 years and employed 1200 people at its peak. It was purchased by U.S. businessman Michael Gallaher in 1997. The company suddenly declared bankruptcy in May 1999, with $70m in debt. Workers occupied the mill for 26 days in October 1999 in an attempt to force the receiver to find a buyer who would run the plant rather than liquidate it. CEP attempted to purchase the mill themselves, but was unsuccessful and the mill's assets were liquidated in late 2000. Subsequently, the Book Depot, a company specializing in remaindered books, moved into the mill and employed approximately 200 people. |
